Terms of Use
Effective October 19, 2026
The Upstander Archive (upstanderarchive.org) is a free, non-commercial project about antisemitism in Los Angeles. It is run by Gabriel Sokolov. In these terms, "we" and "us" mean The Upstander Archive, and "you" means anyone who visits the site.
By using this site you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the site. Our Privacy Policy explains what information we collect and how we handle it.
1. What this site is, and what it isn't
The Archive shares first-person video interviews, numbers from public sources, a map of incidents recorded by ADL, a pledge, and ways to take action. It is here to educate and to document.
It is not legal advice, not a news outlet, and not an emergency service. We are not a law enforcement agency and we don't investigate incidents. If you are in danger, call 911. To report a hate crime in the City of Los Angeles, contact LAPD. You can also report hate incidents anywhere in LA County to LA vs Hate by calling 211.
2. The interviews and our own content belong to us
The interview videos, their edits, the writing on this site, the site design and the Upstander Archive name and logo belong to The Upstander Archive. "The Upstander Archive" is our trademark.
The people in our videos shared their stories with us so they could be published here, on this site. They did not agree to have their stories used anywhere else. So you may watch the videos on this site and share a link to this site. Unless we give you written permission first, you may not:
- download, screen-record, copy, re-upload or rebroadcast any video, audio, clip or still image from it;
- edit, cut, remix, dub, caption over, or take the videos or quotes out of context;
- use any interview, voice or face in ads, fundraising, political campaigns, merchandise, or anything sold;
- use our content to train, fine-tune or test artificial intelligence or machine learning systems, or to build datasets;
- use the Upstander Archive name or logo in a way that suggests we endorse you or work with you.
Quoting a short line from an interview with credit to The Upstander Archive and a link back, for news, commentary, teaching or research, is fine. Asking first is still appreciated. To ask for permission for anything else, email [email protected].
3. Respect the people in the Archive
Some people in the Archive are anonymous or use only their first name, for their safety. You may not try to identify, locate, contact, follow, harass or threaten anyone who appears in or is mentioned on this site, or anyone they are connected to. If you recognize someone who has chosen to stay anonymous, please keep it to yourself.
4. Data and names that belong to others
Many of the numbers and the incident map on this site come from other organizations. Their data, text, names and logos belong to them, and showing them here does not mean they endorse or are connected to The Upstander Archive.
- ADL. The incident map uses data from ADL's H.E.A.T. Map. ADL's descriptions and categories are shown exactly as ADL published them. Copyright 2026 ADL. All rights reserved. Originally posted by ADL at https://www.adl.org/resources/tools-to-track-hate/heat-map. ADL and Anti-Defamation League are registered trademarks of ADL. We are not affiliated with ADL. If you want to reuse ADL's data, get it from ADL and follow ADL's terms.
- Police and government sources. Numbers from the Los Angeles Police Department, the LA County Commission on Human Relations, the California Attorney General, the FBI or other public agencies are credited to them and to the news reports that published them. Each source is listed on the page where its numbers appear. Those agencies have not reviewed or endorsed this site.
- Maps. Map tiles come from OpenFreeMap and OpenMapTiles, using data © OpenStreetMap contributors. Place locations come from GeoNames (CC BY 4.0). The map runs on MapLibre. The map's search box uses the open zipcodes list and OpenStreetMap's Nominatim search.
All other names, logos and trademarks on the site belong to their owners.
5. Accuracy
We work hard to get the facts right, and every number on the site links to its source. But sources can be incomplete, can change, and can disagree with each other. Incidents on the map are reports collected by ADL. They are not court findings, and including an incident does not mean anyone has been found guilty of anything. Circles on the map mark the center of a city or neighborhood, not where something happened. The site is provided "as is", and we can't promise it is complete, current or free of mistakes. If you find one, please tell us and we'll fix it.
6. Using the site
Please don't:
- break the law, or use the site to harass, threaten, or spread hate against anyone;
- scrape, crawl or bulk-download the site or its videos, or get around anything we use to protect them;
- try to hack, overload or interfere with the site, or test it for weaknesses without our permission;
- sign the pledge with someone else's email address, sign it many times, or submit false information;
- pretend to be us or to speak for us.
7. The pledge
Signing the Upstander Pledge is a personal commitment. It does not create any legal duty, and it does not make you part of an organization. Signing adds your email address to our mailing list, which is handled by our email service, Kit. You can unsubscribe at any time with the link at the bottom of every email.
8. Stories and messages you send us
If you email us, we'll read your message and may reply. Sending us your story does not mean we will publish it, and we will never publish a story, name, photo or recording of you without your clear permission first. If you agree to an interview, we'll go over how it will be used before anything goes on the site. You can ask to stay anonymous at any time.
9. If you are in a video, or think something here is wrong
If you appear on the site and want something changed, made anonymous or taken down, email [email protected] and we'll respond as quickly as we can. If you believe something on the site uses your copyrighted work without permission, email us with what the work is, where it appears on the site, your contact details, and a statement that you believe in good faith the use is not authorized. We'll look into it and remove material when that is the right thing to do.
10. Links to other sites
We link to news stories, reports and organizations. We don't control those sites and aren't responsible for them. Their own terms and privacy policies apply.
11. Limits on our responsibility
This site is free and provided as is. To the fullest extent the law allows, The Upstander Archive and the people who run it are not liable for any damages or losses of any kind that come from using or not being able to use the site, relying on its content, or from third-party sites and services. Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not all apply to you.
If you misuse the site or break these terms, you agree to be responsible for the claims and costs that result, including reasonable legal fees.
12. Law that applies
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute about the site will be handled in the state or federal courts located in Los Angeles County, California, unless the law where you live requires otherwise.
13. Changes
We may update these terms as the Archive grows. When we do, we'll change the date at the top of this page. Using the site after a change means you accept the updated terms. If a part of these terms is found to be unenforceable, the rest still applies.
